Paint Splatter Cupcakes

A couple of posts earlier we talked about fun treats for Unique Sheep themed parties. One of my favorite (and SUPER easy) brightly colored treats are Paint Splatter Cupcakes.

Ingredients & Equipment

  • 1 box of yellow or white cake mix + whatever ingredients it calls for (usually eggs, water and vegetable oil)
  • mixing bowl
  • food coloring
  • cupcake pan
  • small bowls
  • several spoons
  • icing of your choice
  • sprinkles

Step 1: Mix together your boxed cake mix like usual

Step 2: Divide your batter into several small bowls – one bowl per color

Step 3: Add food coloring to bowls of batter, one drop at a time until you reach the perfect shade (stick with the 4 colors in most food coloring sets, or go wild blending colors!)

Step 4: Spoon colored batter into cupcake tray. Don’t mix the colors together, just plop one spoonful of red in, then a spoonful of green beside it, etc.

Step 5: Bake as directed.

Step 6: You can use whatever icing you want. I think that a plain white makes a pretty contrast against the colorful cake. With colorful sprinkles, of course!

p.s. if you want a rainbow rather than paint splatters, simply spoon your colored batter into the cupcake pan in even layers and in ROYGBIV order rather than in random, overlapping blobs.

p.p.s. the same technique works with full sized cakes too!
